scitopica.org found!

Here's the URL for the science search engine I couldn't remember during the last class session. How frustrating!
"Search over 3 million documents, plus patents and government data.

Fifteen societies spanning 150 years of sci-tech scholarship help you with your queries."

ask.com worth noting

Walt Mossberg, of the WSj, has an interesting article in this week's Thursday edition, as always. Check it out!

Two New Browsers!

These two new sites will take a few minutes to review, but DON'T miss them! exalead and gigablast. Enjoy!

Which Search Engine When?

Phil Bradley's great website should be linked from every LMC website! Good information from Kindergarden to the rest home. While you're there check out all the icons for saving URLs...it's a lesson unto itself.

What's Web 2.0?

Here's an example of Wikipedia working to its fullest potential. While a simple Google search using the term Web 2.0 will get you lots of good hits/links I think the Wikipedia site is currently the best one-stop source for the latest news on Web 2.0.

Managing bookmarks

Using the terms "managing bookmarks" and "bookmark software" I found some great sites including tutorials for popular browsers and some good ideas for stand alone applications. Three interesting apps are sync2it.com, mybookmarks.com and Google's Desktop Search. I still think that organizing your own bookmarks within the browser is probably best and easiest but you might check out the three items I noted above. I use Google's Desktop Search for other things anyway and highly recommend it.

website software for school librarians

Here are some of my favs. The very best is still Claris' Homepage, which is no longer available commercially. I have the rights to distribute the software for free so if you ask I can loan you a disc to load on your Mac or PC. Apple has replaced Frontpage with Expression which is, in my estimation, quite an improvement. The leader of the pack is still Adobe's, formerly Macromedia's, Dreamweaver. All these names are registered trademarks but I haven't learned how to show the trademark symbol on Blogger yet. Another possibility, and a free one, is to use Google's Page Creator. To see an example of this technology point your browser to davebassmusic.com. A final word, the reason I still favor Homepage is that your don't first have to learn all the "helper" windows, it's nearly as easy to learn and use as a word processing application. If you need more information email me at wesdoak@gmail.com...another hit from Google!

Jux2 is Back!

For those of you who made use of the metasearch engine Jux2, and lamented its departure, it is back. It now searches Google, Yahoo, AskJeeves and MSN.

Thanks to LMT Bruce Cummings of El Camino HS in South SF for the content of this post.

Webstractor citation

Last class we discussed such applications as SnagIt and SnapzPro. Here's an interesting option for Mac OSX users. I'm busy trying to find a similar product for Windows machines. "Maximize Your Web productivity: Everyone knows the web is full of useful information, but all that research can soon get out of control. Webstractor helps you find exactly what you need online and then lets you edit out all the things you don’t need offline, creating stunningly effective documents using standard word processing tools. Try it once and you’ll wonder how you managed without it." For Library Media Teachers and other information professionals this type of application will be a real time saver. I don't ever recommend purchases but I do suggest you check this item out.
